Founded in 1907, our client has witnessed the evolution of retail first-hand, from brick-and-mortar stores to the introduction of online shopping in 1991. Their vision is to be a preeminent online luxury platform, blending innovative in-store and digital experiences – and ValueLabs is supporting them in this journey.
Towards the end of 2018, our client wanted to modernize its e-commerce applications, moving away from Oracle ATG to React. They went in search of a vendor that could help them manage the process. After pilot projects with 12 other vendors still didn’t meet their needs, they met with us in India in January 2019.
Early discussions turned into a partnership that’s now two years strong. Today, our engineers support the client with their ecommerce applications, handling everything from product development to quality assurance.
To give customers a fast and consistent experience across web and mobile, the client wanted to build a progressive web application (PWA). Our team proposed building the PWA on React and deploying it on the cloud. We put together a purpose-built team of React and Cloud experience experts, who created the architecture for the application from scratch, which included integrating a GraphQL API Layer with Dynamo DB, using capabilities of AWS AppSync and going serverless with AWS Lambda. The PWA was then integrated with the client’s third-party active directory and external payment gateway provider.
To ensure quality at every step of the software development cycle, we scaled up our quality engineering team to test the new application and e-commerce site. And, in just two months, the team successfully delivered the PWA and the implementation of the new tech stack, which opened doors for future projects.
As part of improving the online shopping experience, the client also wanted to introduce new private-label credit cards (PLCC), ensuring shoppers could take advantage of the latest features. However, they knew the phasing out of older cards and introduction of new ones would affect many of their existing applications. They needed each application to be tested by a reliable quality assurance team, who could both easily understand the current infrastructure and provide round-the-clock testing of the PLCC migration.
We jumped on board, becoming an extension of the client’s on-site team and adding extra testing capacity to ensure they had all the resources they needed. We took the time to carefully understand the current architecture and existing applications. Our team then supported the migration testing with capabilities in functional and performance testing, and added test automation where possible.
The client’s website was built entirely on Oracle ATG, which they wanted to retire and move over to React for greater flexibility and scalability.
To fulfil their requirements, we proposed using a serverless architecture and multiple services of AWS. These included:
Adopting AWS Lambda for automatic scalability, ensuring applications are ready to handle any surge.
Setting up Route 53 for more flexible and secure traffic routing, while also enabling us to check that web servers are reachable and functional.
Using Amazon S3 to give developers access to reliable, fast and inexpensive data storage, so that they can deploy applications faster and reach more end users.
With this new stack and modern platform in place, the client has reduced their application load times by 20%. Serverless capabilities have also reduced the deployment time of new applications by 50%, as well as the turnaround time of new features by 30%.
Throughout the process, we were careful to maintain the client’s SEO rankings, and even boost them where possible.
ValueLabs has supported the client on a number of projects now – and the relationship has grown from strength to strength. Our team are always on-hand to help the client reach their vision of delivering superior digital experiences.
We’d love to help!
