DESIGNATHON is a 24-hour online hackathon for design students who will become the next generation of designers. It is an opportunity to compete against the best design students across the globe in a fast-paced environment and test your design thinking, management as well as collaboration skills. The teams will be responding to evolving needs and solving challenges in our community and beyond for creating resilience, hope, and inspiration.

FAQ

Q. What are the eligibility criteria to participate in designathon?

To enter the competition, you must be a student at any stage of your university career, from undergraduate to postgraduate studies.
Participation is possible only as a team of 2-4 members. Team members can be from multiple disciplines, institutions, or even various countries or continents. You can't be a member of more than one team.

Q. I am an overseas student. Am I eligible for this competition?

Yes, you are eligible. There are no restrictions on which nationalities can enter.

Q. I am from a non-design background but would like to participate, can I?

As long as you are a student and have a designer on your team, you are eligible to participate.

Q. I am a recent graduate and currently not working anywhere. Can I still participate?

Unfortunately, you can't participate. This competition is solely for students.

Q. What is the last day of registration?

A. Your team must register themselves through the registration form (link here) before 13th November 2020, 11:59 PM.

Q. Do I need to register separately for the conference?

A. Yes, you need to register separately for Design Inspire Conference. However, if you are the finalist, you will get a free pass to the conference.

Q. Can I participate as a member of multiple teams?

A. No, you can only participate in one team.

Q. Do all team members have to be located in one place during Designathon?

A. No, it's not necessary. You can either coordinate remotely or can work together from one location taking all the required precautions in concern. We advise you to stay safe!

Q. Can I make changes to my team post registration? (remove/replace/ add team members)

A. We request you to take some time and then register for the Designathon. We discourage making changes to your team post-registration. However, in certain unavoidable circumstances, you can reach us at designinspire@valuelabs.com. Based on the situation, the organizing team will make a decision that will be final.
You cannot make any changes to your team once the Designathon starts.

Q. When and Where is the Designathon scheduled?

A. Designathon is a 24-hour competition, scheduled from Saturday, November 21, 2020, 1200pm IST to Sunday, November 22, 2020, 1200pm IST.
It will be hosted online. Registered teams will be added to a slack group for communication with the organizers.

Q. What is the evaluation criteria?

A. Three finalist teams will be shortlisted and will get a chance to present their work at the Design Inspire Conference hosted on 28th Nov 2020, where a jury panel will declare the winner. The tasks/projects will be evaluated based on the following:

  1. The project must be an Interaction Design project; else it will be disqualified
  2. Creative Quotient of the concept video.
  3. How effectively does the solution address the chosen problem?
  4. The design process followed & representation/ documentation on the Blog Innovation and creativity of the overall concept.
  5. Communication of work

Q. When do we get the Design brief/Topic?

A. The design brief will be shared with the teams on the slack group 15 minutes before the commencement of the Designathon.

Q. What are the advantages of taking part in the Designathon?

A. There are multiple advantages of participating, some of which are listed below;

  1. 1,00,000 INR cash prize for the Designathon winner team
  2. Multiple prizes to be - Jury choice, People choice, mini-challenges
  3. Opportunity to present your ideas to a live audience (for the finalists only)
  4. Industry exposure
  5. Free pass for attending Design Inspire Conference
  6. Networking
  7. Specially designed certificates for the finalist

Q. Can we upload the work done for Designathon online?

A. Yes, you can but only post the announcement of Designathon winners during Design Inspire Conference scheduled on 28th November 2020

Q. What are the mini-challenges?

A. Mini challenges would be short tasks that would be announced during the Designathon and will have to be completed in the specified time-limit. These will not be mandatory. However, we encourage the teams to participate as there will be prizes.

Q. What is the format in which we need to publish our design task?

A. Teams will be required to provide the below-mentioned information in the submission form. The submission link will be shared on the Slack group 2 hours before the end of the Designathon.

  1. Team name
  2. Blog URL where teams have done documentation of their design process
  3. A presentation of the final article explaining the design solution
  4. URL to YouTube of the prototype or concept video (the link should be listed as private). It should not exceed 2 minutes.
  5. URL to the Mini-Challenge submissions.

Q. Are we expected to send the design task at the end of the Designathon?

A. Yes, you are required to submit the design task by the end of the Designathon, else your team will be disqualified. We recommend that you start uploading your work at least an hour before the end of the Designathon. No further extensions will be provided.

Q. Will we have the rights of our work or will ValueLabs own it?

A. The respective teams will have all the rights to their work. By participating, you will be giving your consent to the organizing team for using parts/whole of the project for promotional purposes. The teams will be given due credit for the same.

Q. Do we have any prize money for the Designathon winner team?

A. The winner of the Designathon will get a cash prize of 1,00,000 INR. In addition to this, we have the below mentioned awards:

  1. Peoples' choice award- 20,000 INR
  2. 3 Mini-challenges - 5,000 INR each

A. The decision of the jury will be final and abiding.

Q. How will the money be transferred into our account if we win?

A. The organizing team will reach out to the winners for the required details for processing the payment. It will take up to 60 working days to process the payment.

Q. What is the channel through which we will get in touch with the organizing team for support?

A. We have created a Slack group for the queries during the Designathon and will add all the participants. Firstly, we advise you to check our Slack #announcements channel. We recommend you to turn on notifications for this channel. We will post updates, clarifications, and answers to FAQs here. Reach out to our team on the Slack #Help channel.

Q. If we face internet problems, can we have an extension for submission? Or will you provide us an internet connection?

A. No, you won't have any extension for the submissions. We suggest you check your internet connections and make prior arrangements to avoid any such issues. The organizing team will not be responsible for providing any internet support for the Designathon.
